Attractions and Activities

For those in search of relaxation, the Hintersteinersee lake is a favourite spot for swimming and sun-bathing, and the gentle pace of a horse-drawn sleigh-ride makes an ideal way to explore the village.

At the top of the Brandstadl cable-car is a super children's activity and mini-adventure area, with swings, slides, climbing frames and other fun features, all in the most wonderful setting.

Scheffau also has its own outdoor tennis courts, para-gliding school with tandem flights, bowling alley, and a children's play area. Nearby Söll (10 mins drive) meanwhile has the hugely popular 'Hexenwasser' water-play park with all manner of fun and games in its natural pools and streams, whilst Westendorf (20 mins drive) offers its 'Alpinolino' discovery park, with marmot-watching and an animal quiz circuit.

Great Days Out

Here in the very heart of the Tyrol, Austria's most popular holiday region, there are towns and villages, castles and fun family attractions all over the area, and you really are spoilt for choice. There are old silver mines to visit at Schwaz, and the salt mines at Berchtesgaden in Bavaria (approx 1½ hours) are always a favourite with children, with an underground train ride, slide and raft across a grotto lake included! For children with energy to burn, a visit to the family fun-park at Pillersee (30 mins) with giant slides, bouncy things, whirly-rides and a rafting pond is well worth while, and children also love the 'Kaiserland' play area at the top of Scheffau's Brandstadl cable-car.

Swimming

Ellmau's Kaiserbad outdoor pool is ideal for families, and costs £4 for adults and £2 for children. And if the sun fails to shine one day, the indoor pool at Söll costs the same.

Cycling/Mountain-biking

There is a cycle-path along the valley for gentle rides, plus endless options for mountain-bikers, who can also take their bikes on most lifts in the area. Mountain bike hire costs from £10 per day.

River Rafting

Available from Kirchdorf, approx half an hour away, with gentle trips suitable for families with children from 5 years also available, at £26 per adult and £21 per child for a half-day on the river, including a picnic lunch along the way.

Golf

The nearest course is outside neighbouring Ellmau, with 27 holes set against the Wilden Kaiser's dramatic skyline. Green fees are £47. The famous Kitzbuhel course is about a half-hour's drive. The new 'Golf Alpin' pass gives you 3 rounds on a wide choice of courses for £117.

Paragliding

Tandem flights are available at £69 - an unforgettable way to experience the grandeur of Scheffau's mountains.
